Thailand, Malaysia boost military ties

Malaysian Defence Minister Dato Seri Hishammuddin bin Tun Hussein on Thursday reaffirmed Malaysia's commitment to help Thailand resolve the southern insurgency problem and restore peace, defence spokesman Kongcheep Tantrawanich said.

Mr Hishammuddin is visiting Thailand between Jan 28-30, during which time he will attend the 52nd Thai-Malaysian General Border Committee meeting. On Thursday, he led a delegation to call on Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Prawit Wongsuwan.

Col Kongcheep, the defence spokesman, said the Thai and Malaysian ministers discussed cooperation to solve security-related problems, including terrorism, human-trafficking and the Muslim insurgency in the three border provinces.

The Malaysian defence minister told Gen Prawit that his country understands Thailand's internal problems and know how difficult it is to solve them.

He said he admired the Thai leaders for having the courage to take the helm of the country's administration by following its road map to reform.  Malaysia is glad to help Thailand move forward to achieve its goal, he added.

Mr Hishammuddin also reaffirmed Malaysia's commitment to help Thailand solve the insurgency problems in the deep South.
