Bike bomb wounds 9 in Narathiwat

A motorcycle bomb exploded in the parking area of Rueso railway station in Narathiwat's Rueso district on Sunday morning, wounding three rangers and six villagers, one of a them a 16-year-old girl, police said.

Pol Lt Montree Chanmuang, the duty officer at Rueso police station, said forensic police officers and a team of explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) police rushed to the railway station on being informed of the incident which took place at about 8.05am.

They found at the scene the debris of a black Honda motorcycle and the remains of the bomb made of a gas cylinder weighing about 10kg.

The injured three members of the 11th Rangers Regiment — Sgt Taweewat Onkwanphet and ranger volunteers Withoon Machangneed and Prasitchai Poempoon — and villagers Tuan Da-o, Anwar Teh, Mayuni Waeni, Abdulloh Doloh, Nurida Ahma and 16-year-old Sakima Salae.

Two of them, Sgt Taweewat and Mayuni, suffered serious wounds.

Witnesses told police that they saw two people drive a motorcycle into the parking area and leave it in front of the railway station near the entrance of the morning market. They then disappeared.

As the three rangers, who had been buying food at the market, walked back to a pickup truck in the parking area, the assailants hiding nearby detonated the bomb with a radio.

The Internal Security Operations Command denounced the attack.
