Six village defence volunteers were wounded, four of them seriously, in an ambush in Yala's Bannang Sata district on Saturday night, police said.
Pol Lt Chawalit Keohothong, the duty officer at Bannang Sata police station, said the incident occurred at about 8pm at Bannang Kuwae village in tambon Bannang Sata.
While the volunteers were returning to the village from a wedding, a number of militants hiding along the roadside opened fire at them. An exchange of fire followed for about 10 minutes before the militants retreated into the dark.
Six volunteers were wounded, four seriously.
