A ranger volunteer was killed and three others wounded in an ambush in Narathiwat’s Sukhirin district on Friday morning.

The four rangers were travelling on two motorcycles when armed men opened fire from the roadside in tambon Romsai, said Pol Col Somchai Phanom-uppakarn, chief of Sukhirin police station.

He said the attack was reported about 11.10am on Friday.

Police and a bomb disposal unit were dispatched to the scene and found several spent M16 bullet cases scattered in the area.

Four rangers shot in the attack were rushed to a nearby hospital, where ranger volunteer Ekkachai Toloh, who had been hit in the head, was pronounced dead.

The ranger team was ambushed shortly after finishing guard duty at a nearby school.

Police blamed insurgents.
