Trafficking probe to finish in June

The investigation into human trafficking is expected to be completed in June when a report will be forwarded to the Office of the Attorney General, Deputy Police Chief Aek Angsunanont said on Sunday.

Pol Gen Aek, chief investigator of the human trafficking case, said a number of prosecutors under orders from the OAG were helping police with the investigation.

The joint investigation team was compiling evidence from various areas from Padang Besar in Satun up to Ranong province.

The team will hold a meeting on Monday to review its progress and lay down a plan to conclude the investigation in June before forwarding a report to the OAG, he said.

Pol Gen Aek said the investigation of 46 suspects who had been in police custody had been completed and the investigators would additionally charge them with transnational crimes.

The suspects had earlier been charged with human trafficking, illegally helping foreign nationals to enter the Kingdom, and illegal detention and confinement of illegal migrants for ransom.

Many of the suspects in detention had confessed, but key suspects were denying all charges, Pol Gen Aek said.

Apart from the investigation, the police will continue with an operation to close human trafficking routes in Songkhla, Satun, Ranong and nearby provinces.

So far arrest warrants have been issued for 77 suspects, of whom 46 are in detention and 31 are still at large.

Many of those on the run had contacted police to surrender. The police will try to arrest all of the suspects, Pol Gen Aek said.
