Military to get pay parity with civil servants

The Defence Council on Wednesday agreed to raise the salaries of middle-level and senior officers, and sergeants, to the same levels as civil servants.

Defence spokesman Maj Gen Khongcheep Tantrawanit said after the meeting of the council that it supported an amendment to the Military Service Act to raise the payscales of soldiers to the same levels as civil service officials.

Their pay scales were made equal in 1995, but in 2008 some civil servants received raises.

The expected pay rises will go to soldiers at the level of colonel and above, or equivalent, and to those at the level of sergeant, or equivalent.

The Defence Council also resolved to pay an extra allowance to soldiers who stand guard duty at military units - either 180 baht or 200 baht a day depending on their rank.

Present in the Defence Council meeting on Wednesday were Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Prawit Wongsuwon, the supreme commander, the permanent secretary for defence and the chiefs of the armed forces.
