Army chief visits troops near Preah Vihear

Deputy Defence Minister Udomdej Sitabutr on Monday travelled to Kantharalak district of Si Sa Ket province to visit army units positioned along the border with Cambodia.

It was the first visit by Gen Udomdej as the army chief to the border area under the jurisdiction of the Suranaree Force of the 2nd Army.

Gen Udomdej was to inspect a border post at Mount Sattasom and go up to the Mor E-Daeng cliff top opposite Cambodia's Preah Vihear temple.

He would visit Thai soldiers at Prasat Ta Khwai temple ruin in Surin province. He would also meet Cambodian soldiers who are also positioned there. The Thai and Cambodian soldiers are each taking care of one half of the temple straddling the common border.

Gen Udomdej told reporters his visit was to give moral support for troops of the Suranaree Force deployed along the border.

He said the relations between Thailand and Cambodia were normal.

Army soldiers and border patrol police have cooperated well to watch for drug smuggling along the border, he said.
