Elderly man fights off militants with shotgun

An elderly man targeted by an insurgent ambush sent the militants fleeing when he fought back with his own shotgun in Rueso district of Narathiwat on Wednesday.

Pradab Thaenmuk, 62, a retired hospital employee, told police he was riding his motorcycle near a village in tambon Rueso Ok, intending to gather wild vegetables, when some men hiding on the roadside fired shots at him with a rifle.

They missed him. He stopped the motorcycle, ran for a cover and then returned fire with his shotgun. The attackers fled.

Police went to examine the scene and found three spent shells from an M16 rifle on the roadside.

Police believed the attackers were insurgent militants.
