Police launch massive crackdown on crime

The Royal Thai Police on Sunday morning launched a massive operation to crack down on vice and crime in Bangkok following the Aug 17 blast at the Erawan shrine that left at least 20 people dead and more than 100 injured.

A ceremony for the launch of the operation was held at the Royal Plaza and presided over by Pol Gen Somyot Poompunmuang, the national police chief. About 1,100 police, military and civilian personnel attended the ceremony.

Pol Gen Somyot said the operation, "sealing off the city to look for criminals", was in line with the goverment's policy given by Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha after the Aug 17 blast to restore confidence in the country's safety.

He said the operation aimed to sweep out criminals and all kinds of vice, saying it was part of a psychological action to mount pressure on perpetrators of the bombing.

Pol Gen Somyot declined to reveal any progress in the investigation of the bombing at Ratchaprasong intersection and the Sathorn boat pier.
