Army general likely to head NSC

A four-star army general attached to the Royal Thai Armed Forces Headquarters is tipped to head the National Security Council (NSC).

Thawip: Name goes forward

Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha said Tuesday that Armed Forces Development Command chief Thawip Netniyom had been nominated to head the council.

A replacement is being sought as NSC civilian chief Anusit Khunakorn is due to retire at the end of September. NSC deputy chief Kanokthip Ratchatanant is also among a field of strong candidates.

Asked to compare between Gen Thawip and Ms Kanokthip, Gen Prayut said the selection must be made to fit the "unusual" situation.

Gen Prayut also said the new chairman of the State Budget Inspection Committee is likely to be a military officer. The post is vacant after Gen Anantaporn Kanjanarat was named as the new energy minister.
