Six rangers were wounded when a bomb explosion overturned and wrecked their patrol truck on a road in Muang district of Yala province on Monday afternoon while they were providing security for Defence College students on a study tour, police said.

The covered pick-up truck was carrying six members of the 43rd Rangers Regiment and was travelling ahead of a van taking eight Defence College students to the Region 4 Internal Security Operations Command's forward headquarters at Sirindhorn camp in tambon Khao Tum of Pattani's Yarang district.

As the patrol truck arrived at a U-turn on Highway 418, which is under repair, a bomb hidden in the road was detonated.

The powerful explosion overturned the pickup, blowing off the engine and front wheels and injuring all  six rangers. The wounded men were identified as Veerachai Suksri, Suchart Rokpakdi, Kachornsak Srisanoi, Nat-ot Jitniam, Tawee Yodrabam and Yongyut Ajpru.

The van taking the Defence College students sped past the scene, sustaining only slight damage,  and continued safely on to the Region 4 Isoc forward headquarters.
