5th anti-govt banner raised in South

A fifth banner criticising the junta in both Thai and Malay was found Monday, this time between trees on Yala-Betong Road in Yala province.

The white cloth banner, measuring 10 sq metres, was hung opposite the health centre for tambon Ban Rae in Thanto district. Its dual-language message attacked the Thai military government for its administration of the southern border provinces.

The banner was first found by a patrol member of the 33rd Rangers Regiment, who subsequently informed the district authorities.

Police believed it was the work of a group of militants intent on creating chaos as the government moves to hold peace talks with insurgency groups operating in the Far South.

Earlier in Pattani, a cloth banner was found about 7am in Nong Chik district hanging on the wall of Padae Lalong School in tambon Bo Thong.  The banner also had a message written in the Malay and Thai attacking state authorities.

Three similar banners were found at three other locations -- one in front of Ban Khon Muang School in Nong Chik district, one in front of Khlong Khut mosque in Nong Chik district, and the other at a village in tambon Rata Panyang of Yaring district.
