Two border patrol policemen were killed in an ambush by militants on the bank of the Sungai Kolok river in Tak Bai district of Narathiwat province on Wednesday, police said.

The attack occurred about 11am when Pol Sgt Maj Narongrit Noothong, 35, and Pol L/Cpl Winai Cheedket, 26, both of BPP Company 447, were travelling on a motorcycle from their base to gather information on insurgent movements after the Muslim festival Hari Raya Aidiladha.

Near Siphan village in tambon Ko Sathon, on a road beside the Sungai Kolok river, armed men hiding in roadside forest opened fire at them.

Their motorcycle slid to one side of the road and the two policemen fell onto coils of barbed wire.  The militants emerged from hiding and continued shooting, killing them both.

They fled with a 9mm pistol taken from the body of Pol Sgt Maj Narongrit.

Police found 19 spent cartridge shells from M16, 11mm and 9mm ammunition at the scene.
