A number of armed men opened fire at a pickup truck in Yala's Raman district on Saturday night, killing two people, one of them an intelligence officer of the 15th Infantry Division, police said.

Pol Col Wanchai Jindawan, a duty officer at Raman police station, said the incident occurred at about 7pm on a road near Buenako village in tambon Balo.

While Sgt Muhamad Sila and a friend were on the way to Supe village in tambon Riang, a group of armed men opened fire at their pickup with military-grade weapons, causing the vehicle to skid off the road. Sgt Muhamad and his friend, who has not yet been identified, were killed.

It was not known whether the attack was related to the insurgency.
