The armed forces will set up a military unit handling cyber security as part of its five-year roadmap, Supreme Commander Gen Sommai Kaodeera said.
Speaking as he chaired a meeting with military top brass at the Royal Armed Forces headquarters, Gen Sommai said the unit would target cyber crime, which had become an increasing threat to the nation.
Army commander Theerachai Nakvanich, navy chief Adm Na Areenij, air force chief ACM Tritos Sonjaeng, national police chief Pol Gen Chakthip Chaijinda and several other senior military officers were among those attending.
Gen Sommai said the armed forces' roadmap was implemented in response to the National Council for Peace and Order's (NCPO) policies. The new unit will serve as a military task force in preparation for the launch of the Asean Community later this year, he said.
Ties between the 10 Asean armed forces would be strengthened after they enter the single community, Gen Sommai said.
"Being a single community will help reduce confrontation and interference among the military forces of the Asean member countries," Gen Sommai said.
In addition to the five-year plan, Gen Sommai said a 20-year roadmap was already underway in line with an order by Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha.
He said the new roadmap would focus on upholding the nation and the monarchy, protecting the country's interests by land, sea and air, developing the country and providing assistance for the Thai people.
"The military will give full cooperation to the government and the NCPO. We will also carry out our duties in response to their orders and policies, and also the Interior Ministry," said Gen Sommai.
