A 54-year-old defence volunteer was killed when a bomb attached to the bottom of his pickup truck exploded in Narathiwat province Tuesday evening.

Police were informed of the attack in Tak Bai district at about 4pm just after the gold Isuzu driven by Tak Bai defence volunteer Isma-ae Jihamat exploded at an intersection on Boribal Prachachon Road in Jeh Hay sub-district.

Body and truck parts were scattered across a 30-metre radius.

Police assumed the bomb had been placed inside a box and likely weighed about 10 kilogrammes. It might have been detonated remotely, police said.

Just before the tragedy, Isma-ae finished work at the Tak Bai district office and was driving home. The bomb stuck under the cab went off about 200 metres from the district office.

Pol Col Jiradej Phrasawang assumed the attack was an act of revenge for the killing of an insurgency suspect in Tak Bai exactly three years ago, as the volunteer had been among the authorities who exchanged gunfire with attackers then.

On Oct 20, 2012, two locations were bombed in Tak Bai and the district's marine police base also was attacked. There were no other casualties in that previous incident.
