Yala hit by bombs, arson attacks

Suspected insurgents launched a coordinated series of arson and bomb attacks in Yala city and other districts on Thursday night. There were no immediate reports of injuries or damage.

The insurgents initially burned tyres on highways in Bannang Sata, Raman, and Muang Yala districts at about 7.30pm. A utility pole and road signs were also burned in the attacks.

About 15 minutes later several bombs went off at three locations in Muang Yala district. The bombs damaged two electricity poles and snapped another in half.

At least eight explosions were also reported in Yaha, Raman, Than To and Bannang Sata districts. Most of the attacks targeted electricity poles in an apparent attempt to cause blackouts, police said.

The attacks caused power blackouts in the old market areas of Yala city, the entire area of Yaha district and in the Raman municipality.

Residents have been advised to stay at home as security and explosive ordnance disposal officers are inspecting areas under attack. Some attack sites will not be inspected until daytime to prevent any ambush of personnel.
