Bomb kills 1, wounds 1 in Yala cemetery

A ranger was killed and his father seriously wounded when a bomb went off at a cemetery in Yala's Muang district on Sunday morning.

Police said the incident occurred at 6.30am while Said Chedoma, a ranger of the 43rd Rangers Regiment, was paying respects to the grave of his mother, who died on Dec 10, at the cemetery of Bo Chet Luk village in tambon Yupo of Muang district. He was accompanied by his father Asi Chedoma, 63.

While Said and his father were reading the Quran, a bomb, which had been planted at the grave, was detonated remotedly with a mobile phone.

Said was killed in the explosion. His body was cut in half. His father was seriously wounded.

Bomb disposal police were dispatched to the scene to check for more bombs and inspect the damage.  

The blast was believed to be the work of a militant group led by Rogi Dolo which operates in the area.
