The deadly bombings and gun battles in Jakarta showed that Islamic State's activities in Southeast Asia were growing and that the region needed to enhance intelligence cooperation, the secretary-general of the National Security Council (NSC) said on Thursday.

The violence was a serious security threat that have raised serious concerns, Thawip Netniyom said.

The attacks were completely unexpected because there were no signals or intelligence. Prior to the incident, Indonesia had not issued any warnings of anything suspicious, he said.

The latest incident showed the necessity for neighbouring countries in the region to better integrate their intelligence operations, Gen Thawip said.

Apart from intelligence, authorities would also have to impose stricter controls on visitors at borders and immigration checkpoints, he said.

The explosions in Jakarta were sad, but were also a lesson that IS was expanding its presence and launching more attacks in the region, Gen Thawip said.

Sek Wannamethee, a spokesman for the Foreign Ministry, said on Thursday that no Thais were injured in the attacks, but the Thai embassy has warned its citizens to take precautions and to leave their contact information with the embassy for coordination in case of emergency.

Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha wrote to the Indonesian government to express his condolences. He condemned the terrorist acts and promised that the Thai government stood ready to support Indonesia in any way possible.
