Malaysia and Thailand have agreed to increase military cooperation, especially in countering terrorism, Defence Ministry spokesman Maj Gen Kongcheep Tantrawanich said.

The spokesman said this after Malaysian navy chief Adm Kamarulzaman Ahmad Badaruddin paid a call on Deputy Defence Minister Gen Udomdej Sitabutr at the Defence Ministry on Wednesday.

He said Gen Udomdej welcomed the increased cooperation, which will be through exchanges of visits of military leaders, training and education programmes, and joint sea and air reconnaissance.

Gen Udomdej stressed the need for Asean member countries to work together to solve the problems of illegal fishing, human trafficking, illegal migration and terrorism.

Malaysia had already set up a cyber team to create awareness and understanding of terrorism within its military, and was ready to share its experience with Thailand and exchange information.
