Two suspected insurgents arrested in Yala

YALA -- Two suspected insurgents wanted under warrants for violent incidents were arrested in a raid by a combine military and police force in Bannang Sata district early Sunday.

At about 3am the 50-strong unit led by Col Thanbut Pisansithiwat, comander of the 47th Ranger Task Force, and Pol Lt Col Tanapol Yaowapak, commander of a special operations police team, laid siege to several houses in the district on learning that some suspects wanted under court warrants were hiding there.

The authorities arrested two suspects in the raid. They are Mustofa Alimama, 33, and Kariya Luemaesa, 30.

The two were suspected to have been involved in an attack that killed Pol Sub-Lt Kittikhun Boonlue, commander of a border patrol police unit, on June 20, 2008. They were also thought to be involved in a gun attack on an armoured car from Bannang Sata police station on March 6 this year, in which no one was hurt.

They were taken to Ingkhayuthaboriharn military camp in Pattani province for questioning.
