PATTANI -- A series of bomb explosions rocked Yaring district town late on Wednesday night and Thursday morning, wounding five policemen, reports said.

Starting at 11.30pm, the bombs went off in quick succession at six spots in an area around the Yaring district office, including one in front of the district office, one in front of the Bank for Agriculture and Agricultural Cooperatives, and one at an automatic teller machine of the Government Savings Bank.

Another bomb exploded about 6.30am on Thursday in front of the post office on Tha Wang road.

Five policemen sustained minor injuries.  They are Pol Lt Prapass Soysunthorn, Pol Lt Narunart Noo-urai, Pol Lt Noppawong Chumkaew, Pol Cpl Benjarong Kaewnuan and Pol L/Cpl Nathawut Sripromthat.  All were admitted to Pattani Hospital.

The blasts caused some damage.

Col Yuthanam Phetmuang, deputy spokesman of the Region 4 Internal Security Operations Command's forward headquarters, said the bombs were all small ones.

It was believed to be the work of militants wanting local people to know they were still active in the area.

Authorities were gathering evidence from the bomb scenes and would investigate further, he said.
