Two soldiers killed in Narathiwat

Two paramilitary rangers were stopped by a bomb and then sprayed with assault rifle bullets in a roadside attack in Rangae district, Narathiwat, Tuesday evening.

Rangae police were informed of the incident at about 4pm when they found the bodies of rangers Sirawut Nualwong and Jakkraphong Chaiyapaet ridden with shrapnel and bullets on a road near Ban Kujing Luepa and Ban Ba-ngo Lubo-anae villages in tambon Chaloem.

There were also pieces of an improvised bomb apparently made from an explosive-filled cooking gas cylinder.

Police said the two soldiers had left their base at Ban Kujing Luepa School on a motorcycle to buy food at the Tanyongmas market in Rangae district. The bomb was detonated on their way back to the base.

After falling on the ground, the two soldiers were fired with assault rifles by hiding attackers. Both sides exchanged gunfire for about 10 minutes and the soldiers were finally overcome by the attackers whose number was estimated at about five.

The attackers also made off with two AK assault rifles of the soldiers.
