Newly promoted Cagliari sign Bruno Alves

ROME - Portugal central defender Bruno Alves has quit Fenerbahce to join newly promoted Cagliari, the Serie A team announced Monday.

The 34-year-old, who will look to add to his 72 international caps at Euro 2016, signed a contract that runs until June 2018.

Cagliari, from the island of Sardinia, finished second in Serie B this season, winning promotion back into the Italian elite after one year in the second division.

Istanbul outfit Fenerbahce came second in the Super Lig to Besiktas and were beaten in the Cup final by Galatasaray. They have vowed to make changes to their squad.

The powerfully built Alves was in the headlines last week when he was shown a straight red card for a head-high challenge on England's Harry Kane in a Euro 2016 warm-up game that Portugal lost 1-0.
