Blackhawks Kane caps season with MVP honours

LOS ANGELES - Chicago Blackhawks winger Patrick Kane captured the Hart Trophy, becoming the first USA-born player to win the award presented annually to the National Hockey League's most valuable player.

Kane beat out Pittsburgh Penguins' Stanley Cup winning centre Sidney Crosby and Dallas Stars all-star Jamie Benn for the award.

Kane was presented with his award at the National Hockey League's season-ending gala in the gambling city of Las Vegas which was named earlier in the day as the site of the league's newest expansion franchise.

The coveted Hart Award caps a brilliant season for Kane who finished with a career-high 46 goals and 106 points as the 27-year-old became the first American-born player to lead the NHL in scoring. He also had a 26-game point streak last season to set a Blackhawk record.

Kane scored at least one point in 64 of his 82 regular season games as Chicago reached their eighth straight playoff appearance.

Florida Panthers right winger Jaromir Jagr was the winner of the Bill Masterton Trophy for perseverance, sportsmanship and dedication.

The 44-year-old Jagr sparked the Panthers to franchise records for wins (47) and points (103) while capturing their second division title.

He also led Florida in scoring with 27 goals, 39 assists and 66 points, becoming the oldest player in NHL history to surpass the 60-point plateau.

Los Angeles Kings defenceman Drew Doughty won the James Norris Memorial Trophy, awarded to the league's top defenceman, while Braden Holtby of the Washington Capitals won his first Vezina Trophy which goes to the league's best goaltender.

Kane's teammate Artemi Panarin was named the winner of the Calder Trophy as the NHL's top rookie.
