Chainat, who are in the relegation zone, want the Frenchman to help their fight to avoid the drop.

The Hornbills are 16th in the 18-team league.

Pongolle made 38 appearances and scored only four goals for Liverpool from 2001-2006.

Pongolle: "I first knew about Thailand when I visited here with Liverpool. I know that football is popular here and Thai people like football.

"I will try to help Chainat stay up in the Thai League."

Chainat manager Anurut Nakasai said: "This is a big step for our team. We are confident that he will be able to help us avoid relegation. We hope he can play for us in our next match against Chonburi this weekend."

Torres signs new deal

Spanish international striker Fernando Torres has signed a new one-year contract with Atletico Madrid, the Spanish club announced.

The 32-year-old returned to Atletico on an 18-month loan deal from AC Milan in December 2014 and had been a free agent after his contract expired at the end of the 2015/16 season.

"I am happy to be here. I never had any doubts about where I wanted to be during the course of this process even though we didn't know what was going to happen," Torres said in a statement.

"In the end, the important thing is that I got what I had hoped for."

Last season Torres helped Atletico finish third in La Liga and reach the final of the Champions League, which his side lost on penalties to Real Madrid.

He scored 11 league goals in 30 appearances last season and netted once in Europe against Barcelona in the Champions League quarter-final.

Meanwhile, Heurelho Gomes' superb performances which earned him Watford's player of the season award gained due reward yesterday with a new improved two year contract.

The 35-year-old former Brazilian international goalkeeper, who first caught the eye in Europe with Dutch side PSV Eindhoven, has been outstanding for 'The Hornets' since signing from Spurs in May 2014.

"Goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes has agreed terms on an improved contract offer from the Hornets," read a statement on the club's website.

"The Brazilian, whose deal runs until 2018, has been rewarded for his fine performances in the Watford goal over the past two years."
