Star's doping test looming

Thailand is anxiously awaiting confirmation if badminton star Ratchanok Intanon tested positive for a banned substance a few months ago.

Ratchanok: Could be axed from Rio Games

It was reported Wednesday that world No.4 Ratchanok failed a doping test during the Badminton Asia Championships in China in April.

If confirmed, she would be axed from next month's Olympics, Thai officials said.

Maj Gen Charouck Areerachakaran, secretary-general of the National Olympic Committee of Thailand, said Thai authorities were still waiting to hear from the Badminton World Federation and other concerned parties.

"We are awaiting confirmation," he said.

The Sports Authority of Thailand said all Thai athletes for the Rio Olympics were tested a couple of months ago and no samples were positive.

Ratchanok is one of 52 Thai athletes who qualified for the Rio Games.

She is seen as one of Thailand's best medal hopes after winning three titles and briefly becoming the world No.1 in April.
