When SCG Muang Thong United defeated Buriram 3-2 on Sunday night they not only remained perched atop the Thai League but also completed a historic double over their bitter rivals.

The victory at SCG Stadium was the Kirins' second over Buriram in the league this season after having never previously recorded a win against the northeastern giants in any competition. Muang Thong had beaten Buriram 3-0 in the first leg away at I-Mobile Stadium.

Muang Thong entered the match under immense pressure as a Jaycee Okwunwanne hat-trick on Saturday night had given Bangkok United a 3-2 win over BEC Tero Sasana and briefly put them two points ahead of the Kirins.

Muang Thong coach Totchtawan Sripan praised his team for rallying from a goal down.

"We were wary of their three strikers so we had to curb our desire to attack but conceding that first goal didn't leave us with any choice but to move forward," said Totchtawan, adding: "I am glad it worked out."

Buriram coach Afshin Ghotbi said: "When we got the goal, our defence became slack. We created many opportunities and should have picked up a point. There are 10 more matches to be played and our chances of winning the title are still alive."

In the other matches, Ratchaburi edged Navy 2-1; Sukhothai were 3-1 winners at Samut Prakan; Chainat held Suphanburi to a 1-1 draw; Pattaya United beat bottom-placed BBCU 3-2; Nakhon Ratchasima and Si Sa Ket played to a 1-1 draw; Bangkok Glass routed Chiang Rai United 3-1; and Army United suffered a 2-0 loss to Chonburi at home.
