Thai badminton star Ratchanok Intanon reached the last-16 round after beating Yip Pui Yin of Hong Kong 21-18, 21-12 in her last Group L match at the Rio Olympic Games on Sunday.

The world No.4 qualified for the knockout stage after two straight triumphs. Only the group winners advanced to the last-16 round of the women's badminton singles.

Former world and Asian champion Ratchanok had few problems against Yip, who had lost to the Thai in straight sets twice this year ahead of the Rio Games.

Earlier in the three-woman group, she defeated Kati Tolmoff of Estonia. Tolmoff defeated Yip in the group's other match to finish 1-1, while Yip was winless.

Ratchanok, 21, is likely to face No.10 Akane Yamaguchi of Japan in the last-16 round on Tuesday morning.

Also advancing was the nation's second-ranking women's player, , who easily defeated Wendy Hsuan-Yu Chen of Australia, 21-14, 21-15.

Porntip will likely play India's No.2-ranked player and Group G winner Saina Nehwai in the Group of 16, also Tuesday morning.

Tuesday's Round of 16 draw has not been completed but all matches are scheduled for 4.30, 5.30 or 6.30am, Thailand time.

Play now speeds up, with matches every day for winners in the single-elimination tournament. Quarter-finals will be Wednesday evening Thailand time, and semi-finals on Thursday evening. The women's badminton final will be Friday night.
