Thais line up Cuban coach

Stinging failure at the recently-concluded Rio Olympics has forced the Thailand Boxing Association to revert to the tested exercise of putting the national fighters under the care of a Cuban coach.

TBA chief Pichai Chunhavajira.

The TBA is promising to employ an unnamed coach from Cuba after its five fighters failed to bag a medal in Rio, producing Thailand's worst performance at the Olympic Games in 40 years.

TBA president Pichai Chunhavajira, who has faced calls to resign, is not giving in and is aiming to resurrect Thai boxing fortunes by hiring a Cuban coach.

"To prepare for the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo, we will have a new coach from Cuba but I cannot name him at the moment," he said.

"Cuba has many qualified coaches as we all saw at the Rio Games."

Of the 13 gold medals at stake in Rio, Cuba and Uzbekistan claimed three each, while France won two.

Thailand have, so far, won four Olympic gold medals in boxing and three of them came when Cuban Juan Fontanils coached the national team.

Fontanils guided Somluck Kamsing to win Thailand's first-ever Olympic gold in 1996 with Wijarn Ponlid (2000) and Manus Boonjamnong (2004) following.

Pichai also promised to develop a pool of 80 young boxers for training at the national academy, which will open later this year.
