Sponsorship problems denied Dechawat Poomjaeng a place in the SangSom 6-red World Championship at Central Plaza Lardprao.

But his elder brother Suchakree proudly carried the family name into the last 32.

He was unbeaten in his first three matches before losing 5-3 to China's Yuan Sijun, who joined him in the last 32.

Known as Jack on the Thai snooker circuit, Dechawat, now 38, became an instant crowd favourite during the 2014 World Championship at Sheffield's Crucible Theatre where he reached the second round that year.

Unfortunately, Dechawat missed the 2016 6-red World Championship as his own sponsor is a rival of the tournament sponsor leaving his 41-year-old brother Suchakree, nicknamed Kwan, to go it alone.

Victories over Scotland's Stephen Maguire, New Zealand's Daniel Haenga and Poland's Mateusz Baranowski guaranteed him a place in the knockout stages which start today.

His unbeaten group record unfortunately came to an end yesterday when he lost 5-3 Yuan.

Defending champion Thepchaiya Un-Nooh tackled double winner Mark Davis.

The Thai though won't want to remember this contest as Davis, the 2012 and 2013 champion raced to a 5-0 victory which enabled him to top this group with an unbeaten record.

New kid on the block, Akani Songsermsawad, following a hat-trick of victories, was surprisingly beaten 5-4 by Hong Kong professional Chau Hon Man.

Consolation was the fact he had already done enough to reach the last 32 but he stumbled again in his final group match against Egyptian Basem Eltahhan.

Ratchapol Pu-Ob-Orm (James Wattana) also qualified for the knockout stages though it was a close call.

He had to win his last match against Darren Morgan. He sealed a 5-3 win that eliminated the Welshman.
