Veteran Boonsak Ponsana reached the second round of the Thailand Open without breaking a sweat after his opponent Simon Santoso of Indonesia withdrew.

Bidding for his second tittle at the US$120,000 Grand Prix Gold event, the Thai secured a walkover win against Santoro in the opening round (last 64) of the men's singles at Bangkok's Nimibutr Stadium.

The 34-year-old Boonsak, seeded fourth and ranked 29th in the world, will today meet compatriot Kantawat Leelavechabutr or Wisnu Yuli Prasetyo of Indonesia in the second round.

Boonsak won the tournament in 2003 and has been runner-up on five occasions.

Top seed Ihsan Maulana Mustofa of Indonesia, ranked 17th in the world, was due to meet Thailand's Suppanyu Avihingsanon last night.

Mustofa was last year's runner-up after losing to Lee Hyun-Il of South Korea in the final.

Meanwhile, six Thai women, led by world No.13 Porntip Buranarasertsuk, will start their campaigns today.

Second seed Porntip, the only Thai to reach the quarter-finals at the 2016 Olympics, takes on Hera Desi of Indonesia.

Third seed Busanan Ongbamrungphan, who is seeking her second win this year after claiming the Indonesia Masters title, entertains Ling Fang Hu of Taiwan while Nichaon Jindapol meets Sayaka Takahashi of Japan.

Pornpawee Chonchuwong, who is second in the world's junior rankings, is up against Singapore's Chua Hu Zhen Grace.

The other two Thai women are Sarita Suwannakitborihan and Supanida Ketethong.

Bodin Isara and Savitree Amitrapai, ranked 15th in the world, are top seeds in the mixed doubles with world No.21 Dechapol Puavaranukroh and Sapsiree Taerattanachai seeded second.

Both pairs begin their campaigns today.

Bodin and Savitree will face Tseng Min Hao and Ling Fang Hu of Taiwan, while Dechapol and Sapsiree will play Hee Chun Mak and Yeung Nga Ting of Hong Kong.

Bodin will also play in the first round of the men's doubles today when he and his partner Nipitphon Phuangphuapet face Ho Wai Lun and Tam Chun Hei of Hong Kong.

The top seeds in the men's doubles are world No.16 Kien Keat Koo and Boon Heong Tan of Malaysia, who were last year's runners-up, while Berry Angriawan and Rian Agung Saputro of Indonesia are seeded second.
