Local stars Suppanyu Avihingsanon and Tanongsak Saensomboonsuk cruised into the third round of the Thailand Open yesterday.

Suppanyu beat compatriot Nonpakorn Nantateero 21-10, 21-15 in the second round (last 32) in the men's singles of the US$120,000 event at Bangkok's Nimibutr Stadium.

Ranked 174th in the world, Suppanyu stunned top seed and world No.23 Ihsan Maulana Mustofa of Indonesia with a 2-1 win in the first round on Tuesday night.

The 26-year-old will today face Japan's world No.57 Kazumasa Sakai who lost to the Thai in 2011.

Fifth seed Tanongsak earned his second win in the Grand Prix Gold event with a victory over Riichi Takeshita of Japan.

In the third round, the world No.24 Thai will meet No.193 Panji Ahmad Maulana of Indonesia for a place in the quarter-finals.

In the women's singles first round (last 32), fourth seed Nichaon Jindapol came from behind to beat Sayaka Takahashi of Japan 20-22, 21-19, 21-11.

The Phuket player will next face Chien Hui Yu of Taiwan or fellow Thai Piramon Chamnaktan for a quarter-final spot.

Young star Pornpawee Chonchuwong, who is second in the world's junior rankings, took a comfortable 21-8, 21-8 win over Singapore's Chua Hu Zhen Grace.

The 18-year-old will today meet sixth seed Jing Yi Tee of Malaysia. Jing is ranked 28th in the world but has lost to the Thai in their two meetings.

In the mixed doubles, top seeds Bodin Isara and Savitree Amitrapai, ranked 15th in the world, suffered a first-round exit after losing to Tseng Min Hao and Ling Fang Hu of Taiwan 21-11, 15-21, 20-22.

In the men's doubles, Bodin and Nipitphon Phuangphuapet beat Ho Wai Lun and Tam Chun Hei of Hong Kong in straight sets.

The third-seeded Thais will face Indonesia's Danny Bawa Chrisnanta and Hendra Wijaya in the second round.

Top seeds and world No.16 Kien Keat Koo and Boon Heong Tan of Malaysia, who were last year's runners-up, were beaten by Takuto Inoue and Yuki Kaneko of Japan.

Thailand's Wannawat Ampunsuwan and Tinn Isriyanet also booked a place in the second round with a win over Chee Tean Tan and Wee Gieen Tan of Malaysia.

In the women's doubles, world No.15 Puttita Supajirakul and Sapsiree Taerattanachai easily beat Dini Fitri Alviani and Inten Ratnasari of Indonesia 21-4, 21-10.
