Thailand aim to get a result for their beloved late monarch when they take on Australia in a World Cup qualifier at Rajamangala National Stadium tonight.

His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej, who passed away on Oct 13, was a fan of the sport and patron of the Football Association of Thailand (FAT).

"We want to get a good result for the King,'' Thailand coach Kiatisak Senamuang told yesterday's press conference.

"We also want to bring the smiles back to the Thai people's faces."

FAT president Somyot Poompunmuang has promised to give the team 10 million baht if they beat the Socceroos.

"The reward is not more important than the King and the Thai people. I have told my players to give their all as the King may watch us from above," Kiatisak said.

But it may be an impossible task for Thailand to beat the mighty Australians in their fifth game of Group B of Asia's final qualifying round for the 2018 World Cup.

Thailand are still looking for their first point of the campaign following four successive losses to Saudi Arabia, Japan, the United Arab Emirates and Iraq.

The Thais have conceded 10 goals and scored only once.

Australia are currently second behind Saudi Arabia who visit Japan today.

However, Kiatisak is still upbeat about his team's chances of upsetting the Aussies.

"Although we do not have a single point at the moment, we don't feel the pressure. Indeed, the Australians will feel the pressure as they are favourites," said Kiatisak, whose men have trained together for 19 days.

"Australia are one of the strongest teams in Asia, and several of their players play in Europe. But we are not afraid of them. If we get at least a point, it will boost our confidence.

"Our players are looking forward to the match. There could be a surprise tomorrow."

Australia only defeated the Thais 1-0 in Bangkok five years ago, also in a World Cup qualifier.

While in the Brisbane leg in that World Cup qualifying round, Thailand took an early lead after a swift counter-attack before second-half goals sent the Socceroos to a 2-1 win.

In the Asian Cup in Bangkok in 2007, Australia eased past the Thais 4-0. However, the outcome was not settled until the final 10 minutes when Australia scored three times.

Australia coach Ange Postecoglou said at yesterday's press conference that he felt sorry for the Thai people after the loss of their King.

"It is important that we show our respects,'' said the coach adding that his men will wear a special strip to honour the mourning period.

The Australians are well-prepared for the match, having arrived in Bangkok last Tuesday.

"We have never trained together for one week before. We wanted to have a warm-up game but it was cancelled. It is good to have a full week of training here,'' Postecoglou said.

"We have studied Thailand's matches. We will try to get three points to reach our goal of qualifying for the World Cup finals."
