Murray and Soares went into the ATP Tour Finals trailing French duo Nicolas Mahut and Pierre-Hugues Herbert by 575 points.

But the Australian and US Open doubles champions overhauled them on Thursday with their third group stage win at the Tour Finals.

Herbert and Mahut were eliminated after losing their first two matches, but could still have prolonged the race by winning their final group match against Henri Kontinen and John Peers.

However, thy lost 6-7 (5/7) 6-4 10/4 on Friday, meaning Murray and Soares cannot be overtaken.

Murray will hope his success inspires his brother Andy, who can hold onto his singles number one ranking if he wins the Tour Finals for the first time.
