Golfer Ariya, Muay Thai fighter Weerapong also honoured by SAT on National Sports Day

Thailand's athletes of the year awards were dominated by Rio Games medallists led by Olympic weightlifting champion Sukanya Srisurat.

Sukanya was named female athlete of the year, while taekwondo fighter Tawin Harnprab, a silver medallist in Rio, was selected as male athlete of 2016 by the Sports Authority of Thailand (SAT) during Friday's ceremony.

The annual event marks National Sports Day which was established after late King Bhumibol Adulyadej won a gold medal in sailing at the SEAP Games on Dec 16, 1967.

In other major awards, world No.2 golfer Ariya Jutanugarn easily claimed the professional athlete of the year title, while Weerapong Un-lamai, better known by his fight name as Puenkol Tor Surat, was crowned the best Muay Thai boxer.

Sukanya, who won gold in the women's 58kg division, was picked ahead of teammate Sopita Tanasan, the Olympic champion in the 48kg class, because of her record-breaking performance.

Sukanya set a new Olympic mark of 110kg in the snatch.

Sukanya and Sopita were the only two Thais who won gold medals at the Rio Olympics.

Their coaches, Aree Wiratthaworn and Gholamhossein Ghorban Zadeh Boreijani, were named the best Thai and foreign coaches respectively.

The Thai Amateur Weightlifting Association was named the best association after its athletes took home two gold, one silver and one bronze medals from the Olympics.

Tawin, a surprise silver medallist, won the best male athlete award ahead of Sinphet Kruaythong, who won bronze in Rio to become the first Thai man to win an Olympic medal in weightlifting.

Wheelchair racer Pongsakorn Paeyo, who won two gold and two silver medals at the 2016 Paralympic Games in Rio, earned the best male disabled athlete title.

The 20-year-old beat veteran and his idol Prawat Wahoram, 35, for the award.

Prawat is Thailand's most successful Paralympian ever with seven golds including two in Rio.

In the female category, the award went to boccia player Supin Tipmanee, who won gold in the mixed team BC1-2 event in Rio.

The best female youth athlete was taekwondo exponent Panipak Wongpattanakit, who got bronze at the Rio Games, while the male title belonged to Tipmongkol Khemsri (jet ski).

Golfer Ariya claimed the professional athlete of the year award after a breakthrough season.

The 20-year-old has this year become the first Thai to win on the LPGA Tour. Starting the year at 63rd in the world, she won five titles and moved up to second place.

She also toppled world No.1 Lydia Ko of New Zealand to receive the LPGA Player of the Year award.

Ariya was selected ahead of badminton player Ratchanok Intanon, who won four titles this year.

Ariya is the first Thai champion on the LPGA Tour with her win at the Yokohama Tire Classic in May.

She won five tournaments this year including the Women's British Open.

Weerapong, 19, won all of his last 11 fights and is currently the title-holder in the super-flyweight division at Ratchadamnoen stadium.

Sirisak Yodyathai, who guided Thai Honda FC to win the League One title, got the best professional coach award.

The team will play in the Thai League next year.
