A large number of Thailand's leading golfers will play at this week's Boonchu Ruangkit Championship to honour the tournament's host.

The third edition of the 3.5 million baht event, hosted by veteran golfer Boonchu Ruangkit, will take place at the Rancho Charnvee Resort and Country Club in Nakhon Ratchasima from Thursday to Sunday.

It is the season-ending tournament on both the All Thailand Golf Tour and Asian Development Tour and is held in honour of Boonchu for his contribution to the sport.

"Thanks to all concerned parties for help in organising the event,'' the 60-year-old golfer told yesterday's press conference.

One of the most respected golfers of the continent, Boonchu is dubbed the Godfather of Asian golf.

It will be the first time that Thailand's top golfers have played in the same event.

They include Thongchai Jaidee, Kiradech Aphibarnrat, Prayad Marksaeng, Thaworn Wiratchant, and defending champion Phachara Khongwatmai.

Boonchu, former president of the Professional Golf Association of Thailand has won five Asian Tour titles and four European Senior Tour crowns, and is now playing on the Japan Senior Tour.

He also runs a golf academy. Among his students is Thanyakorn Khrongpha who won in Khon Kaen on Sunday.
