Thailand turn focus to World Cup

Kiatisak hopes Suzuki win leads to results

After guiding Thailand to a record fifth AFF Suzuki Cup title, coach Kiatisak Senamuang is looking forward to good results in Asia's final qualifying round for the 2018 World Cup.

Kiatisak's men beat Indonesia's 2-0 at Bangkok's Rajamangala National Stadium in the final second leg for a 3-2 aggregate win on Saturday.

Thailand are now the winningest nation in the tournament with five titles to their credit.

Thailand suffered five losses to Saudi Arabia, Japan, the United Arab Emirates and Iraq in their first five games of Group B of Asia's final qualifiers for Russia 2018.

The War Elephants then secured an impressive 2-2 draw with Australia.

The qualifying round will resume next year as Thailand will host Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Iraq and travel to Japan and Australia.

"We have three remaining home games against Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Iraq. With our home-field advantage and support from fans, we should get six or seven points from these three games,'' Kiatisak said.

The coach also said his men were capable of getting points from matches at Japan and Australia.

Thailand are currently last in Group B with one point after five matches.

Saudi Arabia and Japan each have 10 points, Australia and the UAE nine each, and Iraq three.

In Group A are Iran (11 points), South Korea (10), Uzbekistan (9), Syria (5), Qatar (4) and China (2).

The top two teams of each group automatically qualify for the 2018 World Cup.

The two third-placed sides meet in a play-off with the winners facing a Concacaf team for another berth.

Meanwhile, Thailand remain second in Southeast Asia according to Fifa's latest world rankings issued yesterday.

With 19 points from the Suzuki Cup, Thailand moved up three places to 126 in the world, six places behind the Philippines.

Thailand are No.18 in Asia, with Iran the continent's top-ranked team at No.30 overall.

"I am not serious about the rankings,'' Thailand coach Kiatisak said. "We are kings of Asean after winning the Suzuki Cup."
