The Football Association of Thailand (FAT) will deploy more than 1,200 police and security officials at Supachalasai Stadium for the Thailand Champions Cup game this Sunday.

The Thailand Champions Cup, which until last year was known as the King's Trophy, match will be played between Thai League champions SCG Muang Thong United and FA Cup winners Sukhothai.

The decision to change the name of the match, which traditionally marks the kick-off of the new season, was taken at a recent FAT meeting. The clash will start at 7pm.

FAT deputy secretary-general Patit Supa-pong said yesterday: "We had a meeting with the organising committee and we have decided to beef up the security for the Thailand Champions Cup match.

"There will be more than 1,200 police and security officials manning the venue and surrounding areas. Fire engines will also be available in case any flares are fired.

"The punishment for those caught making trouble will be severe because we want the match to take place without any problems."

More wait for Kiatisak

The planned talks to discuss renewal of national team coach Kiatisak Senamuang's contract suffered another delay as the FAT president Pol Gen Somyot Poompanmuang has to undertake a trip to Japan.

Kiatisak's contract will expire on Feb 1.

Somyot yesterday informed media after attending a press conference for the Chang Chonburi Invitation 2017 tournament at a local hotel that he would invite Kiatisak for a discussion after his return from Japan.

Somyot said: "Kiatisak's contract will end on Feb 1 and after its expiry, I will call the national team coach to have a talk whether to renew his contract.

"The other details of the contract, such as the benefits offered and length of the deal, will be worked out later.

"I don't have an actual time and date for the discussion right now."

Somyot added: "We can't have the meeting early because I have to leave for Japan on Jan 26 to observe the work at the J-Green Sagai Stadium and its academy.

"At the same time, our U15 girls' team will also be participating in a tournament in Japan, so I will go and watch them play.

"After I have come back, I will make an appointment with Kiatisak to discuss his contract."
