Asian Tour patron proud to be part of Thailand's success story

Asian Tour patron Santi Bhirombhakdi said that Thailand's golfers have made swift progress over the last few years, and to maintain this upward trajectory they must be able to handle the pressure success brings.

"When you fail, you must stand up and fight," said Santi, who is also the president of Singha Corporation.

"Playing golf is a lot like life. You can make an eagle, a birdie, a bogey or a double bogey."

The Singha boss believes that for golfers the pressure is mainly psychological, and stressed that mental strength is the key to success in the sport.

Santi recently accepted an invitation from the Asian Tour to become a patron, thanks to his contributions to the sport.

Last year was regarded one of the best for Thai golfers.

World No.2 Ariya Jutanugarn won five titles on the LPGA Tour including the Women's British Open, while Prayad Marksaeng won four Japan Senior Tour events.

Thitiphun Chuayprakrong, Pavit Tangkamolprasert and Poom Saksaensin also recorded victories on the Asian Tour.

Fourteen Thai golfers finished in the top-60 of the Asian Tour's 2016 Order of Merit to secure full playing rights for this year and another nine players earned tour cards through the Q-school.

The country also has nine representatives on the LPGA Tour and four players on the Japan Golf Tour. Thongchai Jaidee, Kiradech Aphibarnrat and Prom Meesawat will mainly play on the European Tour this year.
