Ovechkin hat-trick helps Caps edge Wild

ST PAUL - TJ Oshie scored his second goal of the game 1:42 minutes into overtime to bookend Alex Ovechkin's hat-trick, Braden Holtby earned his 40th win and the NHL-leading Washington Capitals beat the Minnesota Wild 5-4 on Tuesday night for their fifth straight victory.

After Eric Staal's goal for the Wild tied the game with 26.6 seconds left in regulation, Oshie took a pass in the left circle from Marcus Johansson and beat struggling Wild goalie Devan Dubnyk with a wrist shot. Johansson had four assists.

Martin Hanzal and Jason Pominville had a goal and an assist apiece, but the Wild lost for the eighth time in nine games and fell to 3-11-1 in March after forward Zach Parise exited early with an injury.

In Edmonton, Cam Talbot made 34 saves and Edmonton Oilers earned a play-off spot for the first time in 11 years by beating Los Angeles Kings 2-1.

Connor McDavid and Eric Gryba scored for the Oilers, who have won seven of eight. Edmonton last made the postseason in 2006.

Brent Burns scored a power-play goal 3:10 minutes into overtime and San Jose Sharks snapped a six-game losing streak, rallying past visiting New York Rangers 5-4 on a night when both teams clinched a play-off berth.

Chris Tierney tied the game with his second goal with 2:15 minutes to play in regulation after San Jose had blown a 3-1 lead. Jannik Hansen added his first goal since joining the Sharks, and Melker Karlsson scored short-handed.

In Vancouver, Corey Perry and Patrick Eaves scored 74 seconds apart early in the first period, and Anaheim Ducks cruised past Vancouver Canucks 4-1 to extend their season-high winning streak to five games.

Tuukka Rask made 24 saves in his return from a one-game absence and Boston Bruins beat Nashville Predators 4-1 to boost their play-off chances.

In Toronto, Auston Matthews broke Wendel Clark's 31-year-old franchise rookie record with his 35th goal of the season in Maple Leafs' 3-2 victory over Florida Panthers.

Cam Atkinson scored his team-leading 34th goal and Sergei Bobrovsky made 41 saves to power Columbus past Buffalo 3-1.
