Rijkaard joins race for Thai football job

Former Holland star submits profile to FAT

Former Holland international Frank Rijkaard has become the latest coach to express interest in taking over the reins of the Thailand national team.

Rijkaard, who has long been a household name, has submitted his profile to the Football Association of Thailand and joined the lengthening list of those interested in the job of the national team coach.

FAT secretary general Pol Lt Pisan Judilok confirmed on Wednesday: "We have received the profile of Frank Rajkaard, who has applied for the job of Thailand national team coach after Kiatisak Senamuang resigned as the head coach."

Pisan did not give further details, but added: "FAT president Pol Gen Somyot Poompunmuang and its technical chairman Witthaya Laohakul are busy making up their minds and will announce the decision later."

Rijkaard played for Ajax, Real Zaragoza and Milan and represented the Netherlands national team side 73 times, scoring 10 goals.

In his managerial career, he has been at the helm of the Netherlands national team, Sparta Rotterdam, Barcelona and Galatasaray. He has also coached Asian powerhouse Saudi Arabia.

The Dutch star is regarded as one of the best defensive midfielders in footballing history and was among the top players of his generation.

In a glowing tribute to the Dutch in 2010, Rijkaard was described by respected British broadsheet The Daily Telegraph as "a stylish player of faultless pedigree".

Since Kiatisak tendered his resignation early this month, a number of top-notch coaches have expressed their desire to fill in the vacancy.

The FAT recently revealed that two Brazilian greats had also applied for the job.

It has been reported that legendary striker Zico and 1994 World Cup-winning captain Carlos Dunga have submitted their profiles to the national football governing body.

Former national team coach Winfried Schaefer is also interested in staging a comeback, applying for the job he previously held for three years.

Former Argentina coach Aleandro Sabella is said to be a target of the FAT.

Claudio Ranieri, former Leicester City manager who led the Thai-owned club to a fairytale success in the English Premier League last year, has also been named among those on the FAT wish list.

However, Pisan revealed yesterday that the FAT had a budget of around 100 million baht to hire a new coach, whereas Ranieri would cost the association twice the amount, which he admitted was "way too high".

Thailand are at the bottom of Group B in the final phase of Asian qualifiers for the 2018 World Cup after losing six of their seven matches and drawing only one.
