Ratchanok eyes upturn at Asia Championships event

World No.10 Ratchanok Intanon will be trying to win her first title of the year at the Asia Championships which begin today in Wuhan, China.

The sixth-seeded Thai will face world No.33 Chen Xiaoxin of China in the first round.

Having failed in the defence of her India, Malaysia and Singapore titles this month, Ratchanok is hoping to improve on her performances in those three tournaments.

She reached the quarter-finals in India and Malaysia and crashed out in the first round in Singapore.

However, the 22-year-old star, who reached the All England final last month, said she had not yet reached full strength after returning from an injury lay-off.

The 2013 world champion said she was not worried much about her results in the opening stages of the season as there are still a lot of tournaments in the second half of the year for her to earn ranking points.

Also in the women's singles, world No.12 Busanan Ongbamrungphan will take on No.11 Chen Yufei of China, No.15 Nitchaon Jindapol will be up against No.42 Pai Yu Po of Taiwan, and Pornpawee Chochuwong will meet No.30 Chiang Mei Hui, also from Taiwan.

In the men's singles, No.11 Tanongsak Saensomboonsuk will begin his campaign against a qualifier.

In the mixed doubles, No.11 pair Dechapol Puavaranukroh and Sapsiree Taerattanachai, runners-up in Singapore, will play Ronald Alexander and Melati Daeva of Indonesia.

In the women's doubles, No.9 pair Sapsiree and Putita Supajirakul will face Malaysia's Vivian Hoo and Woon Khe Wei.
