Ratchanok and Nitchaon fall in Wuhan quarters

Dechapol Puavaranukroh and Sapsiree Taerattanachai stunned top seeds Zheng Siwei and Chen Qingchen to secure their place in the semi-finals of the Asia Championships in Wuhan, China yesterday.

The eighth-seeded Thais defeated the Chinese duo 21-19, 21-17 and will meet another Chinese pair, Wang Yilyu and Huang Dongping, in today's semi-finals.

Wang and Huang overcame Indonesian fifth seeds Praveen Jordan and Debby Susanto 24-22, 21-19.

Dechapol and Sapsiree have been enjoying the form of their lives since claiming their breakthrough victory at the US$120,000 Swiss Open Grand Prix Gold event last month. They also beat Zheng and Chen in the last four in Basel.

And despite losing in the final of the Singapore Open -- their first ever appearance in a Superseries decider -- a couple of weeks ago, Dechapol and Sapsiree gave China's Lu Kai and Huang Yaqiong a real test before succumbing in a thrilling three-game final.

Lu and Huang also reached the last four yesterday after beating Malaysia's Tan Kian Meng and Lai Pei Jing 21-11, 21-19.

Dechapol and Kittinupong Kedren were scheduled to take on third seeds Chai Biao and Hong Wei of China in the men's doubles quarter-final match late last night.

World No.10 Ratchanok Intanon failed to make it to the last four after losing to old nemesis Akane Yamaguchi 16-21, 19-21 in the women's singles quarter-finals yesterday.

The opening game was extra disappointing for the sixth seed, who led 15-9 at one stage but lost 11 straight points to concede the advantage to the second-seeded Japanese.

Yamaguchi faces either fourth seed PV Sindhu of India or eighth seed He Bingjiao of China in today's semi-finals.

Nitchaon Jindapol was unable to follow up on her impressive performance against South Korean third seed Sung Ji-Hyun in the previous round as she lost to Sung's compatriot Lee Jang-Mi 19-21, 9-21, ending Thailand's interest in the women's singles.

Qualifier Lee is up against top seed and world No.1 Tai Tzu-ying in the other semi-final today.

Tai, chasing her fourth title in as many tournaments this year, was unstoppable as she cruised past Chen Yufei of China 21-11, 21-17 in 31 minutes yesterday.

Lee Chong Wei will square off against arch-rival Lin Dan in today's semi-finals of the men's singles after both eased past their semi-final opponents.

Fourth seed Lin of China defeated seventh seed Chou Tien-chen of Taiwan 21-14, 21-12 before top seed Lee of Malaysia joined him in the last four with a 21-18, 21-13 win over Hsu Jen Hao of Taiwan.

In the bottom half of the draw, second seed Chen Long faces fellow Chinese Shi Yuqi. Chen beat Angus Ng Ka Long of Hong Kong 21-17, 21-13, while sixth seeded Shi beat Son Wan-Ho of South Korea 21-16, 21-15.
