Thai sisters Ariya and Moriya Jutanugarn could meet in the second round of the Lorena Ochoa Match Play in Mexico City which begins today.

The tournament at Club de Golf Mexico features 17 of the top 25 players in the world rankings including No.1 Lydia Ko of New Zealand and No.3 Ariya.

The 64-player field is divided into four groups of 16 players with 32 matches of single elimination concluding with the final on Sunday.

Ariya and older sister Moriya are in the same Annika Sorenstam group.

In their first matches, Ariya will face American Amy Anderson while Moriya will take on Alena Sharp from Canada.

If both win, they will meet each other in the last-32 round.

"I am ready for every tournament," said Ariya.

Ariya won five titles last year but has yet to claim one this season with two runner-up finishes.

She is coming off a joint ninth place at last week's Texas Shootout for her seven top 10s this season.

Pornanong Phatlum is the other Thai in the tournament.

Tournament host and 27-time LPGA Tour winner Lorena Ochoa will be enshrined in the World Golf Hall of Fame in September.

Trump's friend Nicklaus

US President Donald Trump has namechecked "friend" and golf legend Jack Nicklaus in a congratulatory note to the strongman leader of Turkmenistan, state media in the Central Asian country reported yesterday.

Government mouthpiece Neutral Turkmenistan reported Trump sent a "message" to authoritarian ruler Gurbanguly Berdymukhamedov to congratulate the country on the spring equinox holiday of Nowruz, which is celebrated in the second half of March.

"My friend Jack Nicklaus, who recently returned after his visit to Ashgabat, told me a lot about the beauty of Turkmenistan and the warm hospitality of the Turkmen people," the Russian-language newspaper quoted Trump as saying.

"The American people and our business circles will continue to explore new areas for further development of cooperation with Turkmenistan."

Nicklaus, a vocal supporter of Trump, is currently building a golf club near capital city Ashgabat with his company Nicklaus Design. bangkok post/afp
