Dechapol, Sapsiree sail through at Australian Open

Dechapol Puavaranukroh and Sapsiree Taerattanachai breezed through their second round match, but Ratchanok Intanon suffered her third straight loss to world No.1 Tai Tzu-ying at the Australian Open on Thursday.

The eighth seeded Thai duo made it three out of three against Reginald Lee Chun Hei and Chau Hoi Wah of Hong Kong, winning their second round encounter 21-9, 21-18 to move into the mixed doubles quarter-finals of the US$750,000 BWF Superseries tournament at Sydney Olympic Park Sports Centre.

Dechapol and Sapsiree beat the Hong Kong pair in their previous two meetings at the 2016 Japan Open and the Sudirman Cup earlier this year.

They next face Kim Dong-Young and Kim Ha-Na after the Koreans beat another Hong Kong duo Tang Chun Man and Tse Ying Suet 21-6, 21-15 yesterday.

Top seed Tai again proved too strong for Ratchanok, who is unseeded this week, winning their second round match 21-11, 21-18 in just 34 minutes.

Tai defeated Ratchanok during a group match at the Dubai World Superseries Finals in December and also in the final of the All England Open in March.

Ratchanok admitted she simply didn't play well yesterday.

"I didn't play well especially in the first game. My timing was just off," said Ratchanok. "I put too much pressure on myself."

Tai goes on to face PV Sindhu after the Indian fifth seed knocked out Chen Xiaoxin of China 21-13, 21-18.

Third seed Akane Yamaguchi of Japan joined Tai in the last eight after she beat Yeo Jia Min of Singapore 21-14, 21-15.

She next faces eight seed Chen Yufei after the Chinese defeated Yamaguchi's compatriot Aya Ohori 21-19, 21-18.

Yamaguchi could face Tai in the last four.

In the bottom half, sixth seed Sun Yu of China beat Lee Jang-Mi of South Korea 21-14, 21-17 to set up a clash with India's Saina Nehwal, who overcame Soniia Cheah of Malaysia 21-15, 20-22, 21-14.

Sayaka Takahashi meets Nozomi Okuhara in an all-Japanese clash after winning their second round matches against seventh seed He Bingjiao of China and Minatsu Mitani, also from Japan, respectively.

Top-ranked Son Wan-Ho of South Korea crashed out early after he lost to in-form Srikanth Kidambi 15-21, 21-13, 21-13 in the second round of the men's singles event.

India's world No.11 Kidambi, who won the Indonesia Open Superseries Premier event on Sunday, next faces 16th-ranked compatriot Sai Praneeth in today's quarters.
