Ratchaburi Mitr Phol manager Tanawat Nitikanchana, who was involved in a bloody incident with Chonburi striker Tiago Cunha on Saturday night, has temporarily quit his job with the Thai League 1 club.
Tanawat announced his decision at a press conference yesterday.
The incident took place at the end of the first half of the match between the two sides which hosts Ratchaburi won 5-1.
Tanawat reportedly slapped the back of Cunha's head after the Brazilian had doused him with drinking water. The Sharks' striker splashed more water on the Ratchaburi boss after being hit.
It is alleged that a guard then punched Cunha in the face, leaving the forward needing six stitches.
Tanawat told the news conference: "The incident took place when I walked off with the match referee at the end of the first half.
"I have watched the video of the incident and I agree that the guard overreacted. He could have simply separated us and should not have hurt Cunha like that. The guard has been barred from working at the venue again.
"I am here to assume responsibility for what happened and would like to apologise to both teams and their fans. I don't know what sort of punishment I will receive.
"Until further developments, Robert Procuerer will act as Ratchaburi manager and I will not interfere in his job."
The Football Association of Thailand is expected to make a ruling today.
In a Thai League 1 game on Sunday night, SCG Muang Thong United coach Totchtawan Sripan expressed relief after a 1-1 home draw with arch-rivals Buriram United.
Rafael Bastos gave Buriram the lead a couple of minutes into the second half, and the Kirins equalised through Leandro Assumpcao three minutes from time.
Buriram lead the table with 53 points, while Muang Thong are second with 49 points.
In other matches on Sunday night, Chiang Rai United beat Thai Honda 3-1, Ubon UMT United defeated Port 2-1 and Pattaya United won 2-0 at Si Sa Ket.
Meanwhile, Bangkok Glass have sacked their Australian coach Aurelio Vidmar and appointed former Thailand international Surachai Jaturapattarapong as the caretaker boss until the end of the season.
