Ratchanok starts campaign

Thailand's Ratchanok Intanon begins her bid to claim a second world title today, boosted by her title-winning run at the New Zealand Open earlier this month.

Ratchanok, a former world No.1 who has been seeded eighth for the BWF World Championships in Glasgow, was awarded a first-round bye.

She faces the winner of last night's first-round clash between Wendy Chen Hsuan-yu of Australia or Yap Rui Chen of Malaysia today.

The Thai star, who has slumped to world No.8 after a long stretch of disappointing results, is on a comeback trail.

She won first her world title in 2013 when she became the youngest ever winner of the tournament at the age of 18.

Ratchanok, who won this year's Thailand Open, is still her country's only world champion in the sport.

Ratchanok could face top seed and world No.2 Akane Yamaguchi of Japan in the quarter-finals, which are scheduled to take place on Friday.

The Japanese, who eliminated Ratchanok in the second round of the 2016 Rio Olympic Games, was handed the top billing for the Glasgow tournament after current world No.1 Tai Tzu-ying of Taiwan pulled out because she has to play at the World University Games on home soil.

Yamaguchi has also been awarded a first-round bye and she takes on the winner of the match between Line Kjaersfeldt of Denmark and Maria Ulitina of Ukraine in the second round today.

Yamaguchi and two-time defending champion Carolina Marin of Spain are the favourites for this year's women's singles top honours.

Tanongsak Saensomboonsuk is the only other Thai player taking in the world championships.

The 26-year-old, the 11th seed in the men's singles, was to face Dutch player Nick Fransman in the first round late last night.

Both Ratchanok and Tanongsak have skipped the 29th edition of the SEA Games, which officially got under way on Saturday in Kuala Lumpur.

Reigning world No.1 Son Wan-ho of South Korea, Chinese Lin Dan and Malaysian Lee Chong Wei are the fancied shuttlers to claim the men's singles title at the Glasgow event.
