Defending champions SCG Muang Thong United kept their hopes of retaining the Thai League 1 title alive with a 4-1 hammering of Suphanburi on Sunday night.

Muang Thong remained in second place, six points behind Buriram United, who have 65 points from 27 matches.

In-form striker Leandro Assumpcao netted the first two goals for the Kirins and Heberty Fernandes added the third to the tally. They were gifted their fourth when Suphanburi's Adul Lasoh guided the ball into his own net.

Suphanburi's only goal was scored by Nicolas Velaz early in the first half.

Muang Thong coach Totchtawan Sripan said: "The extent of our victory is misleading.

"Yes, we scored many goals but it doesn't mean that we played a great game.

"I have repeatedly said that every match is very important now and we cannot afford to be below par at all. We have to produce our best in every match. But today [Sunday night] we didn't."

Suphanburi coach Adebayo Gbadebo said: "We were unlucky at times, but we committed some costly mistakes, too. These made a comeback difficult. However, we will try our best in our remaining matches."

In another late game on Sunday night, Ratchaburi sealed a 6-2 win over relegated Super Power Samut Prakan, who have only one point from 27 games.

Ratchaburi scorers were Carlos Acuna (fourth and 20th minutes), Kevin Deeromram (17th), Rungrath Phumjanthuek (35th and 41st) and Chutiphon Thongtae (78th). Super Power's goals were scored by Ronnachai Rangsiyo (37th) and Kittiphol Upachakum (86th).
