The 27-year-old, the top scorer at Euro 2008 and currently the leading marksman in La Liga with six goals, will be out of action for about three weeks, it said in a statement.
He picked up the injury during Sunday's 1-0 win away to Racing Santander and had to be replaced by Nikola Zigic.
Spain, who have already qualified for the 2010 World Cup finals in South Africa, face Armenia on October 10 and Bosnia four days later.
